MTEC-397 Early Patches

What is Early Patches?

Early Patches is a SoundFont collection (manually created and tweaked) on a CD-ROM that includes the original raw audio sample files in WAVE (.WAV) format. The samples are of pre-Renaissance musical instruments, many still in use in Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

Documentation

Documentation for the SoundFont and audio sample files was provided on the CD-ROM as linked HTML pages. They are also available at the Early Patches web site.

Drums

Initially, I am focusing on drum sounds:

Bendir (Moroccan Frame Drum)
Davul or Daoul (Bass Drum)
Kleine Trommel (Small Drum)
Pauke (Kettle Drum)
Riq (Tambourine)
Snare Drum (with and without snares)
Syrien (Frame Drum)
Tar (Frame Drum)
Tombak, Dumbek or Zarb (Tube Drum)
Udo or Darabouka (Ceramic Hand Drum)

Test File Table

There are 0 or more .WAV sample files for each drum “quality” at each dynamic from fff down to ppp. Note that there are no entries in the mp column. For starters I will investigate the Bendir Slap samples, which have the widest dynamic range.

The actual file names are of the form <Folder>\<Quality>_<Dynamic>.wav, for example Bendir\Slap_fff.wav. Alternate samples are numbered, e.g. Bendir\Slap_fff1.wav. However these were not used in this project, i.e. I selected the “best” sample and renamed files where necessary.

In the table below,

NN is the MIDI Note Number (if assigned),

roll is a sampled drum roll,

# is the total number of samples per type and

dif is the total number of different velocities per type.
